Darkness: Model of Sustainable Yachting

Harnessing the Wind
The owners of Darkness aim to create an eco-friendly yacht that harnesses wind power, making it a more environmentally safe alternative to hybrid propulsion systems. This commitment not only enhances the yacht's performance but also minimizes its environmental impact. The project focuses on efficient design both above and below the waterline to reduce energy consumption and reliance on fossil fuels.
Diesel-Electric Technology
At the core of Darkness's engineering is a diesel-electric system, allowing the yacht to meet most of its energy and propulsion needs with just one generator and a 380 kWh battery. This system optimizes fuel efficiency through variable-speed generators, reducing emissions and extending the generator's lifespan. Darkness can operate on stored energy for up to 8 hours, minimizing generator usage to a few times a day.

Emission-Free Sailing Control
Darkness's innovative setup enables emission-free propulsion and sailing control. The electric propulsion system, bow lift, and sail-handling equipment are powered by stored energy, ensuring a quiet sailing experience. The use of axial motor reducers enhances torque density and energy efficiency, allowing the yacht to leave the marina with a fully charged battery and return without starting the generator.
Retractable Propulsion Systems
To achieve optimal hydrodynamic performance, Darkness is equipped with two retractable electric propulsion units that rotate, eliminating the need for a stern lift. These units minimize energy losses and provide quiet propulsion, allowing for an eco-friendly cruising experience.

Regenerative Energy
The retractable propulsion units can also be used for energy regeneration while sailing. By allowing them to rotate, Darkness can generate electricity to recharge its batteries, ensuring a steady flow of clean energy. Additionally, electric winches and drums contribute to energy generation during operation.
Aerodynamic Design
The design of Darkness encompasses the mast, rigging, and deck layout, all engineered to reduce drag and fuel consumption. The advanced aerodynamic profile of the standing rigging and the low-profile captain’s bridge enhance visibility and efficiency both when sailing and motoring.
Wastewater Treatment
To maintain high environmental standards, Darkness is equipped with the Piranha biological sanitation unit, which treats all onboard wastewater. This system combines gray and black water treatment through aeration, enzyme digestion, and ultra-fine filtration, resulting in clean, odorless effluent that meets or exceeds MARPOL requirements.
Food Waste Management
The galley is equipped with a food waste processing unit that handles up to 10 kg of waste daily, reducing the need for waste storage and preventing landfill disposal. This system supports responsible waste management onboard. The crew implements a waste management plan, sorting and categorizing waste for recycling. Plastic and glass bottle compactors contribute to effective waste management practices, emphasizing Darkness's commitment to sustainability.
