DS England Castle

Appleby Castle, situated at the summit of Boroughgate in Appleby, in the Eden Valley on the edge of the Lake District, rises majestically amid 25 acres of picturesque enclosed parkland. As one of the most historically significant castles in the UK, this Grade I-listed building features sandstone walls beneath an elegant pitched slate and lead roof. The 12th-century motte and bailey castle includes a formidable Norman keep, a 13th-century round tower, three charming cottages, office spaces, a tennis court, and fishing rights along the River Eden.
With 22 bedrooms and 19 bathrooms, this historic castle offers ample space for entertaining or, as is currently the case, for rental accommodations. The castle boasts a 15th-century dining room with majestic vaulted ceilings and two Great Halls, one of which dates back to the 12th century. Alongside its historical features, the main building is equipped with modern amenities such as a gym, a hot tub, a sauna, a games room, and plenty of storage areas.
Three external cottages, forming part of the inner bailey walls, provide additional accommodation; two of them have two bedrooms, and all three offer open-plan living spaces. Once owned by the kings of England and Scotland, Appleby Castle is a unique relic of medieval England, set against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District.
Appleby itself is an attractive market town located in the upper Eden Valley. As the county town of the ancient royal borough of Westmorland, it offers a variety of shops, restaurants, and pubs, as well as a train station and both primary and secondary schools. The famous natural attraction of Lake Ullswater is just a 20-minute drive away, and many national walking trails are easily accessible. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool, an 18-hole golf course, a football pitch, a cricket field, squash courts, and a bowling green. The Eden Valley is particularly popular with shooting parties, while the nearby market town of Penrith, known as the Gateway to the North Lakes, is just 12 miles away.
